Jack and Jill (they hate their names) are bored twins on summer vacation who live in the suburbs. They are tired of reading, watching TV, playing video games and texting friends. When Jill gets a weird message on her cell phone with a picture of a taxi on Jack’s screen and an invitation to take a taxi ride, they are mystified. After a phone call to their dad who confirms that he knows about the taxi, they follow the yellow brick path down the road where the yellow taxi marked Timeless awaits them.The driver named Numan, who is a cloud shape-shifter, explains that they are going to take a trip through time using a wormhole as a short cut. Here the twins will meet their ancestors and experience what life was like on earth before life was human. First stop is more than three billion years in the past when the moon was three times bigger and life consisted of slimy green forms on rocks. Their next stop takes them inside a small primitive fish named Astraspis diserata. Jack experiences life as an Ichthostega, a life form that has made the transition to land having both gills and lungs. Their journey proceeds through the evolution cycle to Dimetrodon and the ancestors of the dinosaurs. Then they arrive in the dinosaur age just before the meteor hits the earth destroying most of the planet. As they continue forward, Jack and Jill meet their mammal ancestors, Australopithecus, Homo erectus and the wild wolves that were tamed and taught men how to hunt for food. Now men could hunt for meat and their brain size increased dramatically allowing them to become superior. When the children and the taxi arrive home at last, they find an unexpected surprise on their doorstep.
This book is a fantastic way to teach evolution and history, while allowing students to experience a fantasy adventure at the same time. The reader can imagine herself inside these creatures as the twins go on their riding adventures. They probably won’t realize how much knowledge they are absorbing. Middle grade students should find the reading level comfortable, and the colorful illustrations are an added bonus. Highly recommended for teachers and librarians to add to their bookshelves. Lovers of fantasy, history, time travel and adventure ages eight and above should not miss this one!

I am a first grade teacher and I know that my kids would enjoy this book. I hope it becomes a series. I would start it as a read aloud, but as the children became better readers, they would be drawn to read books in the series themselves. I currently read The Magic Tree House series to my class daily. It is a fun way to reinforce geography and history. If this book was made into a series it could be a science version. It would also work as a video series as the story is fast paced and the quirky taxi cab driver would translate well in film . The kids would love it? Excellent illustrations.
This is a book on evolution told through the eyes of young kids for young kids. Kinda cute, a lot weird. Interesting though. This book was a bit "young" for my tastes but enjoyable and factual. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Jack and Jill are twins who live in an ordinary house in an ordinary neighborhood of an ordinary city. But one summer day they are jolted out of their boredom when a “Time Taxi” arrives at their house and whisks them off on an extraordinary adventure. Bruce Boyce has created a magical fantasy world that helps young readers learn about evolution, while Daniel Demirdjian’s enchanting illustrations allow them to lose themselves in this fantastical world. Through some clever devices, Boyce enables Jack and Jill to experience the world of Darwin’s sea slime and then move on to fish, lizards, dinosaurs, early apes and on to Homo Erectus. Your young reader will be amazed at how fun it is to learn so much about science.
I didn't realize at the time that I would be reading an account of scientific evolution to students. By evolution, I am talking about macorevolution not microevolution. The book takes "travelers" back to visit great, great.....grandparents that are slim, sponges, etc. I was expecting a fun story to read to students but neither I nor the students enjoyed it.
Really fun read and great overall concept for kids. Great way to educate them in an adventurous and entertaining way.
This is a great way to teach kids about evolution! It's exciting and thought provoking. Some science books for kids can be a bore and they often lose interest, not this one. The kids loved it and couldn't wait to see what was on the next page! I would recommend this to any kid 5-10, depending on reading level/level of comprehension. Look forward to more from this author!
